Start of 2026 Tax Filing Season Remains Uncertain

In late July 2025, IRS Commissioner Billy Long stated during a conference that the 2026 tax filing season would likely start around Presidents’ Day, February 16, 2026. This date would be later than in recent years, when the filing season typically opened in late January or early February. Long indicated that IRS staff needed more time for preparations, despite his push for an earlier start date.

However, the IRS later issued a statement clarifying that an official start date for the 2026 filing season has not yet been determined, according to The Tax Adviser. The agency stated that it would announce the timing of the opening in due course.

This potential delay has been met with mixed reactions, with some expressing concerns about potential disruptions and longer wait times for refunds. Others see it as a necessary step to ensure a smoother transition given recent tax law changes and the need for IRS staff to properly prepare.

Commissioner Billy Long said last week that the next filing season would start around Presidents Day, but the IRS said Tuesday that it has not set a date.
